The Domaine Joseph Chamonard, with its pure, refined, and deep red wines, undoubtedly ranks among the Olympus of artisanal vigneron of Beaujolais. The winery is located in the heart of the area, precisely in Corcelette, near the village of Villié-Morgon, which gives its name to the homonymous AOC. Morgon is one of the 10 crus of Beaujolais, and within it, there are 6 different lieux-dits with unique pedological and historical characteristics. Joseph Chamonard passed away in 1990, but his son-in-law Jean-Claude Chanudet along with his daughter Genevieve have carried on his legacy, cultivating the 4.5 hectares of vines with the same passion and maintaining a strictly traditional and sustainable approach.
The climate that characterizes the area is generally temperate, while the soils are mainly composed of schist and granite, with a significant abundance of manganese. The artisanal Joseph Chamonard winery cultivates the vines in full respect of nature, following the principles of organic farming and thus excluding any chemical products.of synthesis. The only variety present is Gamay, a black grape variety that has made the fortunes of the area, whose plants are trained as bush vines with high planting density and very low yields per hectare. Only when the grapes have reached full technological and phenolic maturity is the harvest carried out, and in the winery, the winemaking is decidedly traditional. In fact, following the custom of Beaujolais, the whole clusters are placed in semi-carbonic maceration, with the alcoholic fermentation conducted by only indigenous yeasts at cool temperatures, without the use of any enological additives and with a very limited use of sulfur. The duration of the macerations varies between 15 and 30 days depending on the specific cru and the vintage.
The crus made by Joseph Chamonard are two: Fleurie and Morgon. Both represent top expressions of their respective AOCs, capable of conveying the character of the place in the most spontaneous and refined manner while also possessing extraordinary longevity.
