The Joseph Mellot winery is a historic production reality, boasting very ancient roots. The Mellot family has been associated with wine production since the sixteenth century. In particular, in 1513, Cèsar Mellot served as wine advisor to Louis XIV, also known by the nickname “the Sun King.” A family that has traversed centuries expanding its holdings in the heart of the Loire Valley, settling in the municipality of Sancerre, and which, in the 1900s, received numerous accolades for its role within the wine industry. Coming to today, the winery is led by Catherine Corbeau Mellot, who is focused on continuing a productive discourse where attention to detail makes the difference. Each single terroir is exalted in its individuality, making the product line unique and authentic.
The vineyards of the Joseph Mellot winery extend over more than one hundred hectares, rooting themselves within several important denominations of the Loire, such as Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, and many others. Here, the cultivated grape varieties are only two, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Among the rows, where yields are intentionally kept low, the philosophy of the winery team aims to follow sustainable agriculture principles; in the vineyard, the approach is similar to organic, seeking to work to minimize the impact of carbon dioxide, promoting soil fertility and reducing erosion. In the winery, the grapes are carefully selected, and then the winemaking process begins, which, for some wines, involves fermentation in wood.
Today, Joseph Mellot is considered one of the reference production realities in France for quality and label offerings. Over 40 are the countries in the world where the winery exports its products, from Asia to America, from Scandinavia to Eastern Europe, reaching the tables of the most well-known restaurants and wine shops internationally.
