La Scolca is one of the historic estates in the Gavi area. The property was purchased by the Soldati family in 1919 and is now managed by Chiara Soldati, who represents the fourth generation of passionate winemakers in love with this land. The estate admirably combines the great traditions and savoir-faire of the past with a focus on innovation and a desire to always improve the quality of production, both in the vineyard and in the cellar. Originally, the estate was devoted to arable farming and partly occupied by large areas of woodland. In the early 1900s, in these lands once dedicated to the cultivation of red grape varieties, Cortese began to be planted, with an intuition that was rewarded in the following decades by the vine's perfect adaptability to the sites.
Cortese, in fact, has found the ideal soil and climate conditions to express itself at high levels of quality and produce some of the best white wines in Piedmont. The vineyards are located in the heart of the Gavi territory, in the Rovereto area, which has always been considered a real cru, capable of giving superior quality grapes. The climate, mild and sunny, is influenced by the sea breezes that come up inland from the Ligurian Sea and allows excellent ripening. The soils are of medium texture, predominantly clay matrix, with the presence of sandy veins, ideal for enhancing the elegance, finesse and freshness of the whites. The vineyards cover a total area of about 50 hectares, with some parcels of prized old vines that are more than 60 years old.
Harvesting operations are carried out when the grapes are fully ripe, taking care, however, to preserve the right freshness, which is essential for making great whites. In the winery, all measures are used to enhance the characteristics of the grapes, with very soft pressing and low-temperature vinification. Each vineyard is managed individually, so as to enhance its quality and get the best from each parcel. All this attention has led La Scolca to the top of the appellation, thanks to a collection of elegant, fresh, savory whites that also have good aging potential. This classic production has also been joined by the creation of Metodo Classico labels, representing some of the best sparkling versions of native grape varieties.
