Lucie Cheurlin
Lucie & Sébastien Cheurlin represent the latest generation of a family of winemakers, now dedicated to the production of precious organic Champagne within the wine-growing area of the Côte des Bar, in the extreme southern part of Champagne. The winemaking origins of this family date back to 1788 when Joseph Cheurlin, a parish priest in Landreville, purchased land to produce wine. A century later, Edmond Cheurlin contributed to the enhancement of the Aube by actively participating in the so-called "Champenoise Revolution", which led to the recognition of the Côte des Bar within the Champagne denomination, with winemakers who until then sold their wine to producers from the more historic areas of the region. Today, brothers Lucie and Sébastien nurture their family's passion and wine knowledge in the municipality of Celles-sur-Ource.
The estate of Lucie & Sébastien Cheurlin extends over just 5 hectares of vineyards, managed entirely under certified organic farming, integrated with biodynamic practices. On the typical Kimmeridgian soils, mainly composed of clay and limestone as well as pelagic fossils, the family cultivates Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and, to a lesser extent, Pinot Blanc, with vines that are nearly 50 years old. Lucie and Sébastien apply those traditional techniques that are part of the viticultural heritage of the Cheurlin family, while not renouncing modern agronomic and oenological equipment. Stainless steel tanks are primarily used as wine vessels, containers in which the masses remain to mature for a few months on the fine lees at the end of the fermentation process. Clearly, the subsequent sparkling process occurs in the bottle according to the famous Méthode Champenoise.
In addition to various types of Champagne, such as Blanc de Blancs Millésimé, Rosé, and Demi-Sec, Lucie & Sébastien Cheurlin produce a still red wine made solely from Pinot Noir grapes that falls under the denomination ‘Coteaux Champenois Rouge’. However, the sparkling wines remain the specialty of the winery, all endowed with great balance and drinkability, true expressions ofthe Aube.
