Maffini Luigi

The winery of Luigi Maffini is located near Castellabate, in the lands of Cilento, one of the areas of Campania that in recent years has particularly stood out for the constant growth in the quality level of its wines. The estate was founded in the 1970s by Luigi's father, who also planted the first vineyards. Initially, the idea was simply to produce a little wine for family use and for friends, but the quality of the first vintages encouraged them to continue on this path. Luigi and his wife Raffaella thus decided to dedicate themselves to viticulture and took the reins of the company, starting to consolidate the estate. In 1996, the first vintage of Fiano Kratos was released, crowning a work carried out with great passion.

The Cilento area is very suited for viticulture. It has only come to the attention of enthusiasts in the last few decades, lagging behind other historical areas, thanks mainly to the commitment of some winemakers, including Luigi Maffini, who believed in the extraordinary potential of territory. Cilento is a hilly area of gentle elevations and deep valleys, overlooking the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. The magnificent sunny exposures can enjoy a particularly mild Mediterranean climate, thanks to the gentle breezes from the sea. The soils are composed of sandstones and flysch, sedimentary layers of marls. Poor and rather stony lands, very suitable for quality viticulture based on low natural yields.

It is in this territory, still wild in nature, that Luigi Maffini cultivates his vineyards. Regarding the choice of grape varieties, they focused on two great indigenous varieties: Fiano for the production of whites and Aglianico for reds and rosés. The historical core of the company is located near Castellabate, which, for its characteristic beauty, has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The vineyards are cultivated in the first inland area of Punta Licosa, a few kilometers from the sea. The other vineyards are located in the municipalities of Giungano and Trentinara, not far from the famous Archaeological Park of Paestum, at an altitude of about 300-350 meters above sea level.
