Macchion dei Lupi
Macchion dei Lupi is a small artisanal winery created and managed by owner Carlo Parenti, a businessman who became a winemaker in 2005 after the enlightening meeting with winemaker Attilio Scienza. The approach has been dictated from the beginning by respect for organic farming, later converted into a biodynamic approach both in the vineyard and in the winery, to give life to faithful, truthful, and direct expressions of the territory. For this reason, in recent years, Carlo Parenti has been hailed by critics as a talented winemaker and his activity as one of the most interesting along the Tuscan coast.
The Macchion dei Lupi winery is located in the Suvereto area, in the Livorno Maremma. The few hectares of vineyards are divided into three nuclei, in hilly areas rich in stones and volcanic minerals, exposed to strong daily temperature fluctuations. Here, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese, and in a lower sandy area near the Cornia river, Ansonica are cultivated. Among the rows, leguminous cover crops are practiced, with mechanical weeding in alternating rows, with the aim of pursuing a natural balance and keeping the environment healthy and clean. In the winery, the fermentations are spontaneous, without yeast inoculation, and no fining or filtration is used, to maintain the dense integrity of the wine. The amount of added sulfites is kept very low, in a perspective of respect for the final consumer. The white from Ansonica macerates on the skins for a few days and all expressions rest, during maturation, in different types of wood.
The wines of Macchion dei Lupi are dense in character and personality. They reflect a pure and territorial style, rich in aromatic details and beautiful complexity. Energy, vitality, and articulation spring from a well-defined structure, endowed with backbone, tannins, and phenolic substance. A warm Mediterranean aura breathes over the entire production, imparting sapidity, freshness, and depth to wines full of solar energy, yet not lacking in drive, drinkability, harmony, and relaxation.
