Manganaro Manlio

The winery of Manlio Mangano has a recent history behind it, a lot of enthusiasm, and an infinite passion for the world of wine. While working as an Art Director, Manlio attended Onav and AIS courses that fascinated him to the point of deciding to leave his profession and open a wine shop in Pavia. Thanks to his new job, he began to travel throughout the peninsula in search of interesting wines, visiting various territories and meeting many producers. His innate curiosity and desire to know wine more deeply led him to make a decisive turn in his life and also become a winemaker.

The Manganaro winery was founded in 2017, when, thanks to the help and friendship of the Sicilian producer Nino Barraco, he had the opportunity to rent a hectare of land near the coast of Marsala. It is a small vineyard of Grillo, one of the typical grapes of the area, created in the 1800s by crossing Catarratto and Moscato d’Alessandria. The Mediterranean climate, dry and very windy, mitigated only by the presence of marine breeze regime and the soils particularly suitable for the cultivation of white grape varieties allow Manlio to cultivate quality grapes. Thanks to extraordinary attention in the vineyard and the choice to work with very low yields, already in 2017 he managed to bring excellent, ripe, and healthy bunches to the winery.

The vineyard is managed according to the principles of organic farming, in perfect harmony with the surrounding nature. The absolute centrality of the vineyard is also emphasized by the choice of a handcrafted winemaking process, which involves skin maceration with spontaneous fermentation and the use of only indigenous yeasts. The pressing of whole bunches occurs directly in the tank with feet, according to the oldest peasant traditions. His wine thus preserves an absolute expressive integrity, the result of a philosophy that puts the grape, its aromas, and the iodized and saline characteristics of the wonderful terroir of Marsala at the forefront.
