Martin Texier
Being a "child of art" is not enough. This is demonstrated by Martin Texier, son of the renowned Eric Texier, a prominent name in the chemical-free wine culture scene. Before returning to his roots and starting his great dream of making wine, Martin travels the world and collects experiences. He graduates in finance, works in Brussels, travels Argentina, arrives in New York to work for the great wine importer David Bowler; spends a year in Beaune for a master's in viticulture and oenology and, only after, returns home. And it is there, among the hills of Brézème and the Valley de l’Ouvèze in the Northern Rhône, that in 2017 Martin starts his own project. Endowed with great intelligence and driven by a strong sensitivity to organic viticulture and winemaking without additives, with very low doses of sulfur in bottling, his winery is born which – following the philosophical thinking of his father Eric – soon becomes a reference point among wine enthusiasts from all over the world.
St-Julien-en-St-Alban has 5 hectares of owned vineyards that - developed on very different soils - give life to a wide variety of wines: a pet nat, a white from roussanne, and three single-varietal reds: Cinsault, Grenache, and Syrah. In the vineyard, all chemical substances such as insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides are abolished, relying only on a measured use of copper and sulfur. In the winery, fermentations occur spontaneously thanks to the activity of indigenous yeasts, naturally present on the skins. It is not in Martin's philosophy to resort to massive filtrations and the massive use of sulfites.
Challenging all local trends and reviving the nearly forgotten local traditions of winemaking, Martin manages to create wines that maintain all the freshness and juiciness of the fruit, expressing and elevating the terroir of Ardeche and Drome. As Martin says, the winemaker is not just an artist but a poet, whose goal should not be to create a good
