Maugeri
The Maugeri winery is located on the slopes of Etna, one of the Italian wine regions of excellence, a place that the Maugeri family is committed to enhancing. The modern history of the estate began recently with Renato Maugeri, who together with his daughters Carla, Michela, and Paola decided to recover the old abandoned family vineyards located in the Milo area, on the eastern slope of Etna, a place always suited for the production of white wines. In 2020, the family bottled its first vintage, the result of a sustainable approach from which the Maugeri family derives a small production of high quality.
The 7 hectares of vineyards owned by the Maugeri winery are distributed over 83 terraces between Contrada Praino and Contrada Volpare, in the Milo area, at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level. The terraces are supported by dry stone walls, as per Etna tradition, which create an amphitheater characterized by fertile volcanic soils. The microclimate of the area is also fundamental, characterized by significant daily temperature variations in summer and the constant presence of sea breezes that keep the grapes dry. The cultivated varieties are the local ones, namely Carricante, Nerello Mascalese, and Catarratto, grown through the traditional Etna alberello system according to an approach based on the principles of organic farming. The harvest is carried out strictly by hand while the wine containers used in the winery include stainless steel tanks and French oak tonneaux, with a consistently well-balanced contribution of wood.
The production of the family-run Maugeri winery focuses on Etna Bianco Superiore, a specialty of the Milo area, the only municipality in all of Etna that can boast the designation “Superiore”. These are wines made from pure Carricante grapes that make the energetic mineral stamp their strong point, also endowed with extraordinary longevity. Additionally, the quality of their Catarratto is surprising, capable of highlighting the character of the grape variety.
