Meyer-Fonné

The Meyer family settled in the Alsatian village of Katzenthal back in 1732, coming from Switzerland: in the last years of the 19th century, Felix Meyer founded that exclusively family-run artisan reality that still exists today. The transition from simple viticulture to winemaking, bottling, and selling is due to his nephew François Meyer, who took over the company in the 1960s, while his aunt Lucie Fonné continued the work of caring for the vineyards. In 1992, Felix Meyer, a rising star in the landscape of Alsatian winemakers, took over the domaine and began to develop exports and carry out modernization work: he diversified the various terroirs and Grand Crus, imprinting a personal vision while remaining in line with the previous generation.

The Domaine Meyer-Fonné is located within a territory suited for viticulture since time immemorial: the area of Katzenthal was already populated during Roman times, while the first mention of the place name appears in a document dated 1185. The valley, closed on threesides by heights that reach 300 meters in altitude and open to the east towards the adjacent town of Colmar, benefits from a particularly favorable microclimate. Above extremely varied soils, from poor alluvial origins to clay and sandstone matrices of varying depths, passing through granite rocks, the 18 hectares of property extend, divided into 7 different municipalities and a synthesis of a variety of different terroirs, with the oldest vines dating back to 1965. Riesling and Gewurtztraminer, the white grape Pinots and Pinot Noir, Muscat d’Alsace and Ottonel, Sylvaner and Chardonnay, are the numerous varieties cultivated according to organic farming principles in the Grand Crus Wineck-Schlossberg of Katzenthal, Kaefferkopf of Ammerschwihr, Fursentum of Kientzheim and Sporen of Riquewihr, as well as in the lieu-dit Hinterburg and Pfoeller in Katzenthal, Dorfburg between Ingersheim and Katzenthal, and in the territories of Colmar and Bennwihr.
