Monkey Shoulder
The Monkey Shoulder brand is the star of a selection of Blended Malt Scotch Whiskies of absolute value, appreciated by bartenders all over the world. This brand is part of the Scottish reality William Grant & Sons, an institution in the world of spirits, founded back in 1887 in Dufftown, in Speyside, by William Grant together with his sons. The distillery, still family-run today, decided in the early 2000s to launch Monkey Shoulder whiskies on the market with the idea of proposing a new way to enjoy Scotch whisky, which until then had mostly been consumed neat, instead suggesting it for the creation of modern-style cocktails. The curious name Monkey Shoulder, literally “monkey shoulder,” comes from a peculiar episode related to the traditional production cycle of malt whisky. During the process, the malt was traditionally turned by hand by maltsters using very heavy paddles. Some time ago, one of the maltsters suffered a bizarre injury while performing this operation, resulting in one of his arms tending to dangle, like that of monkeys, from which the nickname monkey shoulder originates.
The production of Monkey Shoulder whiskies begins with the selection of quality raw materials, starting with the barley and water used in the production process. Distillation takes place in small batches using traditional pot stills, while for the subsequent aging phase, first-fill ex-Bourbon oak barrels are mainly used, containers in which the distillate rests for long periods before giving life to the final blend.
The whiskies of Monkey Shoulder are characterized by their toasted aromas and sweet spices, as well as their exceptional organoleptic balance, a quality that makes these spirits ideal in the art of mixology. In fact, Monkey Shoulder whiskies, also produced in a peated version, are born precisely to be used in the preparation of the most varied cocktails, from great classics to the most innovative and imaginative ones.
