Oltretorrente

Oltretorrente was born in 2010 from the initiative of a young couple. Once they completed their studies at the Faculty of Agriculture of the University of Milan and after some collaborations with various Italian wineries, the desire was born to put their studies and professional experiences to use to create their own project. Thus began the search for a place to start the new activity. After long searches, the choice fell on a small farm with one and a half hectares of vineyard and a small winery near Paderna, in the province of Alessandria, south of Tortona. The beautiful hilly area, within an environmental context that is still wild and unspoiled, proved perfect for viticulture, which has been present in these southern Piemonte lands for centuries.

The small property has expanded over the years with the acquisition of another three hectares and the rental of some vineyards. The estate consists of small parcels with many old vines that are between 60 and 100 years old producing low yields of excellent quality. In 2015 a new vineyard of Timorasso was planted, an indigenous white grape variety with great potential. Today Oltretorrente covers a total of seven hectares, at an altitude of about 300 meters above sea level, with a predominant exposure facing north and south. The agronomic management is inspired by the principles of organic farming, fully respecting environmental biodiversity and with particular attention given to the preservation of the precious heritage of century-old vines. The under-row is mowed by hand and in the inter-row, fava beans, vetch, and lupin are sown to preserve the natural vitality of the soils.

All vineyard work and harvesting operations are carried out manually with collection in small boxes and selection of the best bunches, so as to bring only perfectly healthy grapes to the winery. The work in the winery is done with full respect for the grapes, with interventions kept to a minimum, aimed solely at supporting the winemaking process in a natural and spontaneous way. For the wines red long macerations are practiced to obtain rich and complete extractions. For white wines, aging on fine lees is used to give structure and complexity, and the malolactic fermentation is not inhibited. Thus, healthy and genuine wines are born, a direct and clear expression of the territory.
