Otronia
In the heart of Argentine Patagonia, at the southernmost tip of Latin America, the Otronia winery operates, an interpreter of a unique wine region, among the southernmost in the world. This production reality is located precisely in the town of Sarmiento, within the province of Chubut, near Lake Musters. The vinifications are overseen by the talented Mendoza winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia, who, after experiences in California, Bordeaux, and Uruguay, settled in Patagonia. In 2021, the renowned wine critic Tim Atkin named Juan Pablo as young producer of the year due to his work at Otronia. The name Otronia derives from the name by which the lake of Musters was called by the ancient local inhabitants: Otron.
The Otronia estate has 50 hectares of rows situated at an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level. The vineyards were planted in 2010 with the international varieties Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer, Torrontés, Riesling Renano, Merlot, and Malbec. The vines grow on soils clay and sandy of lacustrine origin, rich in river and alluvial rocks, in a cool, dry, and sunny climate characterized by the constant presence of winds that prevent the onset of fungal diseases. The grapes are hand-harvested with careful selection, and for vinification and aging, winemaker Juan Pablo Murgia adopts eggs and concrete tanks, stainless steel vats, and neutral French oak barrels of 2,500 and 5,000 liters. In particular, the Pinot Noir is half processed as whole clusters to enhance its juicy and fruity component.
Thus originates the range of wines from the Otronia winery, labels that have Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as the diamonds, coming from a selection of the best grapes from the best plots. They are fresh and intensely aromatic expressions, qualities that derive from the extreme conditions of the territory of the province of Chubut.
