Podere Erica
Podere Erica is a small organic and biodynamic winery in the Chianti Classico area, located precisely in Barberino Tavarnelle, between Florence and Siena. This Tuscan wine estate was purchased in 2005 by Neal and Jean Dempsey, winelovers from the United States enchanted by Italy. The search for the estate lasted a long 3 years, during which the couple from San Francisco visited 40 different properties before finding the perfect one for them. In 2009, the Dempseys completed the renovation of the farmhouse, preserving its rustic and traditional style. The viticultural and enological aspects were entrusted to the young biodynamic winemaker Marco Giordano, while the sales and marketing sector is the responsibility of Pierpaolo Chelo. The estate also offers the possibility to stay in the old renovated farmhouse dating back 500 years. Moreover, in addition to grape cultivation, the farm is dedicated to olive growing and the breeding of Hungarian Mangalica pigs.
The wine estate Podere Erica has just over 12 hectares of land, of which only 2 are reserved for vines, almost exclusively occupied by Sangiovese, associated with small percentages of Canaiolo, Trebbiano, and Moscato. These native grape varieties are grown at about 350 meters above sea level on clay-limestone soils rich in galestro. The winery operates protecting the environment and biodiversity while respecting the long-established winemaking tradition of Chianti. In this perspective, the agronomic management embraces the principles of organic and biodynamic agriculture, thus excluding the use of synthetic chemical substances in the vineyard and invasive enological additives in the winery, with the exception of sulfites which are used in very small doses. The harvest is done by hand and fermentations occur spontaneously thanks to the yeasts present on the grapes and in the winery environment.
The bottles produced by Podere Erica reflect the typical Chianti style, with names inspired by the numerous birds that populate the area.
