Poggerino
The Poggerino estate is a small winemaking reality active in the heart of Chianti Classico since the 1980s and represents an example of wine craftsmanship. The winery is run by Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who personally manage all phases of production, from vineyard work to winemaking and finally to sales.
The vineyards of Poggerino extend over about 12 hectares at an altitude of 400-500 meters above sea level and enjoy a south-southwest exposure. The soils are rich in stony skeleton, resulting from the weathering of galestro rock, typical of the Chianti area. The main variety cultivated is Sangiovese, which finds the ideal environment here to express its qualitative potential. The training system used is partly a branched guyot, similar to a bush vine, and partly a spurred cordon. Piero and Benedetta believe in the importance of extremely careful vineyard work aimed at obtaining healthy grapes at the highest degree of ripeness. Only in this way is it possible to produce wines with a distinctive style and great personality in full respect of the terroir.
In the vineyard, organic farming is practiced as one of the values most dear to the owners of Poggerino is respect for the environment. Piero and Benedetta are therefore committed to promoting the biological vitality of the soil, its structure, and its mineral variety, which helps establish a natural balance in the vineyard, allowing for the production of excellent quality grapes. Composted manure from an organic farm is used as fertilizer, while annual cover crops, copper, and sulfur are used for pest control, and weeding is done mechanically. Consistent with the approach to vineyard work, intervention in the winery is kept to a minimum, with wines fermenting thanks to the exclusive use of indigenous yeasts and aging in wood or in concrete tanks. The Poggerino winery offers intriguing labels, characterized by great freshness and excellent tannic structure, wines capable of giving voice to the evocative territory of Chianti Classico with a unique style.
