The Poggio Bonelli winery has been firmly established for some time in the exceptional wine-growing area that lies between the Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi denominations, and traces its origins, agricultural growth and business development to the most influential families in the rich and fascinating history of Tuscany. First came the Spennali family in the Middle Ages, followed by the Piccolomini and the Landucci family in the 17th century, and finally the Croci family. A continuous and not always peaceful succession of illustrious and renowned personalities of the Sienese court reveals everything about the reputation of the Poggio Bonelli estate. Even today, this company retains its mythical aura, establishing itself nationally and internationally for the production of high quality and elegant wines, which are a perfect combination of territoriality and a curious approach to modern taste. The Monte dei Paschi di Siena Group has successfully taken over the reins, and with this acquisition it intends to confirm its oldest calling as an agricultural bank. However, it would be impossible to achieve the levels of winemaking excellence currently demonstrated without the advice of a great enologist such as Carlo Ferrini. Florentine by origin, but a true Italian by profession, he began his career in the internal analysis laboratories of the Chianti Classico Consortium.
The Poggio Bonelli winery is located in Castelnuovo Berardenga, in a corner of Tuscan paradise with an evocative landscape and high territorial quality. The current 88 hectares of vineyards stand on tuffaceous and clayey soils of Pliocene origin, with a large presence of sand, exposed to the south and southwest. The main grape varieties cultivated are Sangiovese, which is used to make Chianti and Chianti Classico, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Merlot, which are skilfully blended or enhanced in purity in the winery's other renowned products. Only the best grapes actually reach the vinification cellar, testifying to the rigorous and selective approach that lies at the heart of Poggio Bonelli's entire production. Vinification is typically carried out in temperature-controlled steel tanks, while long ageing takes place in barriques, purchased from the best producers of noble woods.
The Poggio Bonelli estate has always been synonymous with historic quality, yet has always been able to keep up with the times. Inspired by technology and the most innovative savoir faire, it manages to delight even the most modern of palates.
