Prieto y Prieta

Prieto y Prieta is an original and eccentric brand that includes sought-after whiskies produced in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. The brand is owned by Koch, a family-run production company founded in 2009 as a distillery specializing exclusively in the production of mezcal. In 2018, the family boldly decided to embark on whisky production, relying on the talent of Txomin Alcorta, a French master distiller with extensive experience in cognac and the art of aging in wooden barrels. The idea is to create innovative artisanal whiskies that are rooted in the culture and territory of Oaxaca.

The whiskies of the Prieto y Prieta brand are made from a selection of four different indigenous corn varieties from the territory of Oaxaca: purple corn Bolita, white corn Conejo, yellow corn Chalqueño, and red corn Tepecintle. In particular, the white and yellow corn contribute sweet and fruity notes, while the red and purple corn provide distinctive earthy sensations.

The different varieties of the grain are mechanically processed before alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, from which a light ferment is obtained that is distilled using copper pot stills. The subsequent aging period takes place in three different types of oak barrels: new French oak barriques, which impart body and spicy aromas, second-use American oak barrels, which provide sweet hints of vanilla and coconut, and American oak barrels previously used for sherry maturation, responsible for the expressive depth of the whisky.

The Mexican whiskies of the Prieto y Prieta brand are characterized by an innovative and modern style that partly recalls mezcal, the traditional Mexican agave distillate, and partly cognac, the fine grape brandy that master distiller Txomin Alcorta knows very well. In particular, the Prieto y Prieta whiskies stand out for their rich aromas of ripe fruit, sweet spices, and dried fruit, as well as their soft and creamy taste.
