Quinta De La Rosa
In the splendid Douro valley, in Portugal, lies the productive estate Quinta de la Rosa, a key player in the production of classic and colorful Port. The origins of the estate date back to 1815, when Dietrich Feueheerd moved with his family from Hamburg to the city of Porto, starting to trade in minerals and wine. In 1906, Quinta de la Rosa was acquired by the Bergqvist family, while in 1935 the Feuheerd Bros, the trading company of Porto, was sold to the local Barros family, but the estate remained in the hands of Claire Bergqvist, who for years sold grapes to local wineries. The definitive relaunch of the Quinta took place in 1988, when Tim, Claire's son, began with his daughter Sophia to market Port under their own label. From that moment on, the rapid rise of Quinta de la Rosa began, which would lead the estate to establish itself among the best Quintas in the entire Douro and to become one of the first wine estates in the area to also produce table wine from the Douro. Quinta de la Rosa owns more than 60 hectares of vineyards distributed across two different estates: the historic Quinta de la Rosa and the more recent Quinta de Bandeiras, acquired in 2005 with the intention of producing Douro Superior. The vast ampelographic platform includes the traditional grape varieties Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Sousão, Tinta Cão, Roriz, Touriga Barroca, Alvarinho, Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, and Rabigato. The magnificent vineyards are located on very steep hills overlooking the Douro river, facing south and situated on schist soils at altitudes reaching up to 400 meters. Jorge Moreira, the winery's oenologist, aims to harvest grapes at the perfect stage of ripeness, characterized by a balanced ratio of sugars and organic acids. The vinifications are carried out meticulously, without stems for table wines and with stems for Port, the latter fortified with the addition of brandy according to tradition. The focus of Quinta de la Rosa's selection is Port and red wines, although in recent years the production of white wines has also increased. Focusing on Port, the estate offers different types, from Tawny to Vintage, including Tawny 30 Years, Colheita, and others, heritage of a consolidated tradition.
