Royal Brackla
Royal Brackla is the first distillery in the world to ever be granted a Royal Warrant, the honor bestowed by the British Royal Family to commercial companies. Founded in 1812 by naval captain William Fraser, in 1833 it literally distilled the “whisky of the king” for His Majesty William IV of Hanover, sovereign of the United Kingdom of Great Britain, Ireland, and Hanover, who then granted the possibility to affix his coat of arms on the bottlings, and the company’s name gained the royal distinction. The seal is confirmed by his successor, none other than Queen Victoria, who ascended to the throne in 1837: it is the recognition of a great reputation. Throughout its history, the distillery has gone through numerous phases of modernization and expansion and has had various owners, until the current acquisition by John Dewars & Sons Ltd, a brand of the Bacardi group, in 1998.
The original home of Royal Brackla was represented by the estate of the Scottish castle of Cawdor, described as the most romantic manor of the directly from Spain: ex Sherry Oloroso, Sherry Palo Cortado and a blend of these with ex Sherry Pedro Ximenez. The production uses spring water and the infusion of the grain takes place in a lauter tun, while for fermentation there are 6 traditional wooden washbacks and 2 in steel. The distillation finally uses 4 stills taller than usual, 2 for the initial phase and 2 for the spirit still.
