Gilda and Salvatore Martusciello's winery is a family-run business that, since its foundation in 2015, has been committed to the enhancement of Campania's oenological heritage, particularly the territories of the Campi Flegrei, the Sorrento Peninsula and the Agro Aversano. The winery is located in the fascinating setting of Pozzuoli, a beautiful town overlooking the Gulf of Naples, in the heart of the Campi Flegrei. In fact, the Martusciello family has been dedicated to wine since the 1990s, with Salvatore deciding to set up his own business together with his wife Gilda precisely in order to highlight some of the region's historic appellations, based on indigenous grape varieties long considered minor.
The Campania-based Salvatore Martusciello winery has 12 hectares of vineyards, planted on volcanic soil with traditional varieties, including Falanghina, Aglianico, Piedirosso, Asprinio and Sciascinoso, as well as rare indigenous varieties such as Suppezza, Castagnara and Olivella. Some of these grapes are grown in singular contexts, as in the case of the free-range Falanghina and Piedirosso vines of the Campi Flegrei, which managed to escape phylloxera thanks to the sandy and volcanic matrix of the soils, or in the case of Asprinio d'Aversa, grown with the characteristic tree-trained system, a unique example in the world. Only steel containers are used for vinification and ageing, in order to preserve the character of the vines and the terroir as much as possible.
Gilda and Salvatore Martusciello's production is subdivided into several lines: such as the 'Ottouve' selection, created to valorise autochthonous vines that have almost disappeared, and the 'Settevulcani' selection, dedicated to the free-range Falanghina and Piedirosso vineyards cultivated on the volcanic soils of the Campi Flegrei. Lastly, Asprinio d'Aversa 'Trentapioli' pays tribute to this ancient wine from the Casertano area, produced from vines raised to trees with plants reaching 15 metres in height, making it necessary to use ladders for harvesting and cultivation operations. "Wines of persistence" as the producers themselves like to define them, persistence of the history of these lands and sensory persistence of their wines.
