San Donatino

San Donatino is, above all, a family story, of land and vision, born in the heart of Chianti Classico. In 1971, the celebrated French poet and singer-songwriter Léo Ferré purchased, together with his wife Maria Cristina Diaz, this estate on the hills of Castellina in Chianti, choosing to make it not just a place, but a life project. From the very beginning, the Ferré family dedicated themselves to the recovery of the vineyards and olive groves. Today, San Donatino remains, above all, a family business, where every choice is the result of experience, sensitivity, and a deep bond with the territory, enriched by a unique cultural aura left as a legacy by Léo Ferré.

San Donatino only cultivates organic vineyards, certified since 2012. The company works with minimal intervention in the vineyard, fully in line with the artisanal style since the 1990s, when San Donatino was a pioneer of Orange Wine with the ‘Diaccio’. The winery, overseen for years by the legendary Giulio Gambelli and today by Giovanni Stella, operates according to a traditional and rigorous approach, with spontaneous fermentations, long macerations, and months of aging on fine lees. The base wines mature in steel, while the selections and crus rest in wood, always with the aim of avoiding any form of standardization and respecting the trends of the vintages.

In the glass, the wines of San Donatino tell the story of Chianti with a sincere, rustic yet refined voice. The profile is that of vibrant reds, with a lively yet harmonious tannic structure, supported by a natural freshness that comes from the altitude and the balance of the vineyards. These are wines that do not seek shortcuts, but only a direct and identity-driven sip, to convey the image of a territory that is the home of the Ferré family.
