Saumaize

The Domaine Jacques Saumaize is a small winemaking treasure of the Mâconnais, an area of Burgundy where some of the best Chardonnays in the world are produced. In 1981, Jacques Saumaize, renewing the family tradition, founded his own winery in the village of Vergisson, a municipality that falls within the production area of Pouilly-Fuissé, one of the most important AOCs in the region. Six years later, in 1987, his wife Nathalie joined the Domaine bringing with her the family vineyards, while since 2012 the couple has been assisted by their son Anthony. The trio's goal is to bring out the specific character of each cultivated parcel, vinified always separately.

The vineyards of Domaine Jacques Saumaize extend over 12 hectares, located between the Roche de Vergisson and the Roche de Solutré and entirely planted with Chardonnay. This noble Burgundian variety, largely represented by very old vines, benefits from calcareous soils rich in gravel, silt, and clay, as well as an agronomic management based on the principles of organic farming. Always with a view to sustainability and love for their territory, the viticultural operations are carried out by the Saumaize family mainly by hand, and to promote the well-being of the plants and soil, natural herbal teas and biodynamic preparations are used. When the grapes have reached full ripeness, harvesting is carried out, strictly by hand, followed by a gentle pressing using a pneumatic press. The vinifications and subsequent aging mainly take place in barriques, with a measured use of new wood, which is around 20%, and with prolonged stays on the fine lees accompanied by weekly bâtonnage.

The production of the Jacques Saumaize winery revolves around Pouilly-Fuissé, although there are other interpretations of the territory such as Macon-Vergisson, Macon-Bussières, and Saint-Véran. These are Chardonnays with a rich, full, and deep style, capable of highlighting the exceptional qualitative attributes of this denomination that has little or nothing to envy to the much more renowned AOCs
