Tenuta I Gelsi

Tenuta I Gelsi is located in the beating heart of southern Italy, on the fertile and noble slopes of the sleeping volcano of Basilicata, the Vulture. We are in the Monticchio Bagni district of the municipality of Rionero in Vulture, at the northern edge of the region bordering Campania's Irpinia. In this area, the landscape is enchanting, evocative, and scenic, still unspoiled by human presence, where just a few kilometers away are the two famous volcanic lakes of Monticchio, the thermal springs from which the purest oligomineral water of the peninsula is drawn, and the beautiful Calitri plateau. The winery was officially established in 2003, and now Ruggiero Potito is the company's pillar, a winemaker with great experience who has refined his knowledge especially of the vineyards through exchanges of information with the most important agronomic and enological consultants in Italy. The vineyards extend over 10 hectares organized into 3 plots: one of 5 hectares planted in 2006, another of just over 2 hectares on the slope towards Melfi, and an old one of 40 years located a fewkm from Monticchio Bagni and 2 hectares dedicated to white grape varieties.

In the Tenuta I Gelsi winery, Aglianico del Vulture dominates, the most symbolic and representative red grape of the region. Following is Malvasia, the white grape of the Lucanian volcano, traditionally cultivated for years in this territory. The vines are located between 400-600 meters in altitude and draw nourishment from volcanic soils, composed of residues of limestone, clay, and potassium, fragments of sedimentary and igneous rocks, yellow, gray, and reddish sands, volcanic ashes, and a rich quantity of minerals. The grapes, in addition to enjoying an excellent exposure, almost mountainous, mature slowly and perfectly thanks to the wide temperature excursions and the cool, breezy climate of the area.

The wines of Tenuta I Gelsi authentically reflect their territory of origin. They present a mineral-volcanic structure, characterized by warmth, elegance, and drinkability. Alongside Aglianico and Malvasia wines, grappas and extra virgin olive oils are also produced.
