The Bitter Truth

The Bitter Truth is a German brand specializing in the production of bitters and traditional high-quality liqueurs. After a period of obscurity, today bitters are experiencing a renewed focus, also thanks to the modern art of mixology, which has reassessed their value as a necessary element for creating great cocktails. It is a return to tradition, quality, aromatic complexity, and the search for harmony and taste balance. Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck were pioneers and visionaries who founded The Bitter Truth out of their passion for bitters and the desire to create a range of labels that would renew their splendor, showcasing their excellence and versatility.

In the great tradition, bitters were the fundamental ingredient that distinguished cocktails from other drinks such as Toddies, Slings, Fizzes, Sours, or Punches. For a long time, they constituted the base for preparing the best recipes from great bartenders and only with the advent of Prohibition (1920-1933), have fallen into oblivion for over a decade like all other alcoholic beverages. The crisis in the sector led to the closure of most brands, and few survived this long stop. Fortunately, the new generations of bartenders are reassessing bitters, and today they are considered essential for creating excellent cocktails and long drinks.

Both founding partners had good experience in the field of bitters production, made in a completely artisanal way within the bars where they worked. Stephan also had a valuable collection of historic amari, which had not been produced for a long time, to use as a source of inspiration for creating new products, starting from the aromas of the ancient labels most famous in the world. The choice of flavors and consequently the ingredients were guided by the old bitters. Thus were born the first bottles of the range: Orange Bitter, Old Time Aromatic Bitter, and Lemon Bitter. Later, production expanded with the addition of other specialties: Jerry Thomas Bitters, Creole Bitters, Celery Bitters, Grapefruit Bitters, Chocolate Bitters, Tonic Bitters, Peach Bitters, Cucumber Bitters, and Olive Bitters.
