The Lakes Distillery
The Lakes Distillery is the creator of premium quality whisky, gin, and vodka that are born among the lakes and mountains of the fascinating Lake District region, from which it takes its name. This British production reality was officially founded in 2014 within the county of Cumbria, in the northwestern tip of England, near the border with Scotland. Behind the establishment of the distillery is the tenacity of Paul Currie, a son of the trade as his father is the founder of the Arran Distillery, a Scottish reality on the island of Arran, who in 2010 purchased a derelict nineteenth-century farmhouse located in the Lake District area, famous for its lakes and green mountains. After four long years of renovations and preparations, Paul finally launched The Lakes Distillery with the aim of offering a selection of various distillates focused on elegance. It is also essential that the master distiller Dhavall Gandhi is involved in every stage of the processing, in order to ensure a high quality of the final product.
The selection of whisky from The Lakes Distillery, the flagship product of the distillery, begins with the choice of barley varieties and the malting process. The water used comes from the Lake District National Park and during the fermentation phase, which lasts up to 96 hours, double the average, different specially selected yeast strains are used. The subsequent distillation is also slow and long and takes place in copper Pot Still stills according to the traditional discontinuous method. Once the distillation process is completed, aging can proceed, which typically takes place in oak barrels previously used for sherry, which indeed represent 80-90% of the containers used by the distillery. In particular, the barrels, mainly made of Spanish oak, are mostly 500 liters and previously contained Oloroso sherry.
The blend of the different barrels represents the final step in bringing to life the award-winning whiskies of The Lake Distillery. These are not peated single malt or blended whiskies of great charm and expressive depth, capable of reflecting the holistic approach of master distiller Dhavall Gandhi.
