Tobermory Distillery has been a Scottish producer since 1798 linked to the Isle of Mull, an area where it produces exceptionally well-made Single Malt Scotch Whiskies. It all began a year earlier, in 1797, when local merchant John Sinclair applied for the lease of 57 acres driven by a dream of starting a distillery. The application was initially rejected but a year later, thanks to John's stubbornness, Ledaig Distillery was born. In the 1930s, after more than 100 years in business, the distillery had to stop for 41 years because of the sharp drop in demand for whisky due to the Great Depression and Prohibition in the United States. In 1993 the distillery regained its former glory when it was taken over by Burn Stewart Distillers, while in 2013 ownership passed to the Distell Group, which after a few years of renovation reopened in 2019 under the current name Tobermory Distillery.
In the production of its products, Tobermory Distillery uses water from a private lake located near the Mishnish Lakes. The mashing stage takes place in traditional cast-iron tanks with copper domes while four large stills are used for distillation. The precious liquid is then left to age for long periods in wooden casks used for bourbon or sherry, which enriches the distillate's aromatic bouquet while softening its taste.
On the Hebrides, off the west coast of Scotland, Tobermory Distillery produces unpeated Tobermory Whiskies, peated Ledaig Whiskies and also Tobermory Gins, selections that share a proud and vibrant character that reflects the essence of the Isle of Mull. The most representative line is the Tobermory Single Malt Scotch Whisky, made from the distillation of unpeated barley malt with the liquid subsequently matured in oak casks for 12 or 23 years, depending on the label in question.
