Torpez
Torpez is the result of a long history, which begins with the oldest Cave of winemakers in the Provençal department of Var. At the beginning of the 20th century, Saint-Tropez was just a small village of fishermen and farmers. In 1908, the winemakers of the area created a winery to vinify the grapes grown on the hilly slopes overlooking the wonderful gulf. The new brand Torpez, created in 2019, reconnects to this ancient experience to revive and enhance the wines of the area. The area boasts very ancient origins. Nearby Marseille was founded by the Phocaeans around 600 BC, who introduced the culture of the vine in the southern regions of France. The subsequent Roman colonization gave a significant boost to viticulture, and even today Provence represents an important region on the map of French wine.
The splendor of the characteristic seaside village, the bright landscape, and the mild climate of Saint-Tropez have always fascinated painters, writers, and artists, from Matisse to Picasso, from Hemingway to Francis Scott Fitzgerald, from Colette to BrigitteBardot. But the charm of the place is also manifested in the pedoclimatic characteristics perfect for quality viticulture. The climate, warm and Mediterranean, is refreshed by sea breezes and the Mistral. The territory is characterized by the presence of the Massif des Maures, an ancient rock formation of volcanic origin, composed of mica schists. The poor and stony soils and the beautiful hilly exposures are ideal for the vine, which is cultivated in small plots between the sea, olive trees, and Mediterranean scrub, in a context of extraordinary landscape beauty.
The vineyard area of Saint-Tropez covers approximately 180 hectares, divided into 450 plots, which are cultivated by local vignerons with great passion and hard work. The vineyards host the varieties historically present in Provence: Grenache, Tibouren, Cinsault, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Carignan, Rolle, and Ugni Blanc. The harvests are carried out strictly by hand, and the grapes are quickly transported to the Cave for vinifications, which take place simply, usinga light enology. The wines Torpez stand out for their fragrance, freshness, and for the characteristic iodized, saline, and mineral notes typical of the terroir.
