Vega Sicilia
Vega Sicilia is one of the most famous wineries in the world. Its wines are among the best absolute excellences and its name is a legend for all enthusiasts. Its story began in 1982, when the Álvarez family, the current owners, purchased an estate in the Ribera del Duero, one of the most famous and esteemed Spanish wine regions. The philosophy of the company has been clear from the beginning: to produce great wines that can compete with the best reds in the world and to build a strong identity based on a deep knowledge of the territory and its principal grape variety, Tinto Fino, a biotype of Tempranillo. Today, its wines are sold in 149 countries and the Vega Sicilia brand is synonymous with excellence and quality.
Over time, the winery has aimed to expand and diversify its offerings with a development strategy based on expansion into high-potential enological areas. Today, the group manages four estates in Spain: Bodegas Vega Sicilia SA, Bodegas y Viñedos Alión SA, Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia SA, Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia SA and one in Hungary, Tokaj-Oremus Kft. The Vega Sicilia estate is located in the heart of the Ribera del Duero denomination, which occupies the territory of the valley of the famous river, which crosses the Iberian Peninsula and flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a vast property of over 1000 hectares, of which only 210 are dedicated to viticulture, carefully chosen from the most suitable in terms of pedoclimatic conditions.
The Ribera del Duero is a region where the vine has dwelled for centuries and still preserves a rich and precious heritage of old vines. The vineyards are located on a plateau at an altitude between 700 and 1000 meters above sea level, characterized by significant temperature excursions between sunny days and cool nights. In these particular conditions, the grapes ripen slowly and develop particularly rich aromatic profiles. The soils are poor and predominantly calcareous, ideal for red grape varieties. The traditional bush training, with short pruning and few buds, favors a low production per plant with grapes of great concentration. A careful winemaking process and especially aging in wood that lasts many years allow for the production of elegant, complex wines with a fine and silky texture.
