Vina Zaro

Vina Zaro is a Slovenian winery located in Izola, near Koper, in the small stretch of coast overlooking the Adriatic Sea, between the Italian and Croatian borders.  The presence of the Zaro family in these lands is documented as far back as 1348. Even today, the company draws inspiration from its long history and is committed to reviving in this wonderful territory of Slovenian Istria the ancient customs passed down from generation to generation. A craftsmanship savoir-faire that translates into work done with passion. The sole objective of the winery is to create a range of labels that are an authentic expression of a place, which was already known for the excellence of its wines during the time of the Serenissima. Today, the estate covers a total area of about twenty hectares, predominantly cultivated with the varieties historically present in the Istrian lands.

The company consists of four different estates, which allow for the cultivation of each grape variety in the area most suitable for microclimate and soil characteristics.. The Tenuta Folo takes its name from a branch of the Zaro family and has vineyards that date back to the ownership of the ancestors, passed down through the centuries to the present day. It is a single plot of 13 hectares cultivated with Malvasia istriana, Bianchera, Refosco, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Cabernet Franc. The Tenuta Pivol is located in one of the most vocated areas of the Izola territory, and the vines are cultivated on beautiful terraces supported by dry stone walls. The soils are characterized by the presence of flysch, sedimentations of sandstone, and limestone marls, very rich in minerals. The wonderful sunny exposure facing southwest, overlooking the sea, ensures an excellent level of ripening of the grapes of Malvasia, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Nero, Moscato Giallo, Merlot, and Refosco.

limestone and red soils, which then continues down to the sea. The climate is particularly mild and is influenced by the constant sea breezes.  The total area is four hectares and is cultivated with Malvasia istriana, Bianchera, Maločrn Refosco, and Merlot. Finally, the Vigneto Roncald is the only one that does not directly overlook the sea, but enjoys a sunny south-facing exposure and hosts young vines of Malvasia.
