Vinyes Tortuga

Vinyes Tortuga is a young Spanish reality, located in the Alt-Empordà region, in the first hilly hinterland of the coast between Banyuls Sur Mer and Cadaques, almost at the border with France. Dido and Jurriaan founded their winery in 2018, after accumulating numerous experiences around the world. Since 2014 they have worked in France in Tavel, in Spain in Penedès, Montsant, and Priorat, in Chile in the Colchagua Valley, and in Australia in the Barossa Valley. Only after this long apprenticeship did they decide to put their vast knowledge to use by engaging personally. The estate is located in the beautiful unspoiled area of the Albera natural reserve, situated between the first foothills of the Pyrenees mountain range and the Mediterranean Sea.

After working in this region at other estates, Dido and Jurriaan, thanks to a crowdfunding operation, managed to realize their dream and purchase a property of 11 hectares, of which 9.5 are planted with vines, which they are converting to biodynamic organic farming, fully respecting the context.natural. Among the vines, both indigenous grape varieties such as Garnacha and the main international red grape varieties are cultivated: Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Tannat, and Barbera. The project includes grafting some white grape varieties onto certain vineyards to expand the range of wines. The estate is managed sustainably, using solar panels for energy production and with water usage that avoids waste.

During their experiences around the world, Dido and Jurriaan have worked for both large wineries and small artisanal realities, but they were particularly influenced by their internship at Joan Ramon Escoda, which allowed them to learn and understand a natural approach to the world of wine, based on minimal enological intervention, without the use of additives, filtration, or clarification. This is the philosophy they decided to apply to their work at their estate, with the desire to produce straightforward, healthy, and pure wines that are the direct result of high-quality ripe grapes. Their wines are made without added sulfites, precisely to preserve the expressive integrity of the fruit.
