Vionnet Karim

The winery of Karim Vionnet represents, through the elegance of simplicity, a young, dynamic, and talented reality located in Villié-Morgon, among the French hills of Beaujolais. A rising artisan star of Gamay who roots his philosophy in the passion passed down to him by none other than Guy Breton (for whom Karim has worked in the past), one of the pioneers of the stylistic renaissance of this wine area historically dedicated to quantity, reborn thanks to the activity of the quartet formed by Lapierre, Foillard, Thevenet, and Breton himself, previously renamed by the British press as the “Gang of Four.”

Karim Vionnet began his adventure in Beaujolais in 2005, transforming from a baker to a winemaker at the service of the land of Morgon and neighboring villages, quickly becoming one of the most talented and appreciated artisan winemakers of Gamay. Against standardizations, Karim pursues a quality viticulture that gives character and elegance to his reds, which faithfully reflect the climatic trends of the different vintages. In the winery, only indigenous yeasts are used to complete the fermentations, and filtration and clarification are also banned.

The Beaujolais of Karim Vionnet stand out for their finesse and dynamism and are played on the dichotomy between ample freshness and fine sapidity, enclosed in a well-crafted aromatic frame that recalls scents of crunchy and ripe red fruit, flowers, and mineral echoes. Thanks also to his dynamic and playful personality, Karim manages to give a contemporary interpretation to his Gamay: for example, the name of his Beaujolais Village “du Beur dans les Pinards,” through a fun play on words, reflects his Maghreb origins using the term “beur” - which in the political slang of the 1980s referred to North Africans born on French soil - alongside “pinard,” meaning red wine, to symbolize his fortunate adventure in Villié-Morgon.
