Through its complex and sincere wines, the small Spanish winery Viña Ane aims to reveal the most authentic side of the Rioja region. Founded in 2004 by the husband and wife team of Eduardo Monge and Lorena Garbati, this family-run bodega is the result of the owners' desire to continue the winemaking tradition of their respective families. The winery is located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, along the course of the Ebro river, in the Rioja Alta area, which is considered particularly suited due to its higher altitudes and cooler climate. The name Viña Ane pays tribute to Eduardo and Lorena's daughter, Ane, while all labels are illustrated by local artist José Uriszar.
The Viña Ane estate has approximately 5 hectares of vineyards, dedicated to a variety of grape varieties, both local and international, such as Tempranillo, French Grenache, Graciano, Teta de Vaca, Calagraño, Viura, Malvasia, Turruntes, Garnacha Blanca, Verdejo, Maturana Blanca, Tempranillo Blanco, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards, characterised by the presence of more than 100-year-old vines planted at the beginning of the 20th century, are located at an altitude of approximately 600 metres and lie on clayey-calcareous soils that are particularly suited to quality viticulture. The winemaking approach adopted by Eduardo and Lorena is meticulous, far from sophistication and excessive interventionism, with each operation carried out with care and precision. Truncated vats are used as containers for fermentation, which takes place at a controlled temperature, while for ageing, the Monge-Garbati couple use barrels of American, Hungarian and, above all, French oak.
Among the most representative wines of the Viña Ane winery are undoubtedly the Rioja 'Labirinto', the result of the separate vinification of an old Tempranillo plot, and the Rioja 'Centenaria', the expression of a centuries-old vineyard in which no fewer than nine different white grape varieties are cultivated. In general, the bottles produced by Eduardo and Lorena are characterised by exceptional depth and elegance, qualities that are always found in the glass.
