Windspiel

The adventure of Windspiel, young German distillery, was born from four friends, Sandra Wimmeler, Denis Lönnendonker, Rebecca Mertes, and Tobias Schwoll, who decided to radically change their lives and live together on a farm to return to the land and live off their work in total tranquility and harmony with themselves and nature. All this without renouncing their personality, habits, and their ‘epicurean’ lifestyle characterized by elegance, style, and refinement.

The Windspiel farm is nestled in greenery in a village near the small town of Daun, in that area of Rhineland known as Vulkaneifel, due to its volcanic origins. The three friends began raising goats and pigs here, but their main project was to cultivate high-quality potatoes like those from the nearby Eifel plateau. The volcanic and rocky soils of the farm soon proved unsuitable for that production, and one evening, while eating their usual potatoes and drinking gin, the four friends had an idea: to produce gin from the tubers cultivated on the farm.

The name Windspiel, coined by the four friends to name their gin, means “greyhound” and recalls an ancient legend: it is said that Frederick II of Prussia, a great lover of greyhound dogs, already had in mind in the 18th century to produce a liqueur with the fine Eifel potatoes. Thus, the gin of Windspiel was born as a tribute to Frederick the Great and from the craftsmanship of the 4 friends.
