Zahel

The Zahel winery is an interesting Austrian reality, producing wines with a traditional, straightforward, and genuine character. It is located near Vienna, in one of the most suitable areas for viticulture in the whole country. The property has maintained a family character, and today at the helm of the company is Alex Zahler, a representative of the fourth generation, who, along with his wife Hilary, oversees the entire production process, from the vineyard to the winery. The Vienna area is characterized by a rather varied and heterogeneous territory, and Zahel has vineyards in various zones with different soils and microclimates, allowing them to cultivate each grape variety in the place most suitable for its maximum expression. The careful management of each single vineyard, conducted with extreme artisanal care, is one of the winery's strengths, capable of producing high-quality wines that directly express the terroir.

The Maurer area, located southwest of Vienna, stands out for the presence of soils with a good sandy component, composed of sandstone Flysch, with limestone and gypsum in the deeper layers of the subsoil. It is ideal for the cultivation of Wiener Gemischter Satz, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Orangetraube, St. Laurent, and Pinot Noir. The Oberlaa area is located on the highest morainic terrace surrounding Vienna, at an altitude of 270 meters, formed during the last glaciation. The soil is rich in gravel, and the climate is warmer, influenced by the nearby Pannonian plain. Here, the main varieties cultivated are: Wiener Gemischter Satz, Grüner Veltliner, and Blaufränkisch.
