Zampaglione Pierluigi

The Pierluigi Zampaglione winery is located in Calitri, on the Campanian hills of Alta Irpinia overlooking Basilicata and Alta Puglia. The winery, run by Pierluigi Zampaglione and his wife Nerina, was born as a historic agricultural company specialized in the production of cereals. Their success in agriculture is recognized by the public who particularly appreciate the products of their land. In 2002, Guido Zampaglione, Pierluigi's grandson, decided to cultivate two vineyards on two hectares of land with one of the most famous Campanian grape varieties: Fiano.

The winery is situated at about 800 meters above sea level and the resulting wine is almost mountainous. In those areas, there are no other vines, and planting Fiano at those altitudes could be a gamble, but if you know the winemaking practices, the Zampaglione family shows us that nothing is impossible. The vineyards are now just over 15 years old, but their wines already have great potential. The clay and volcanic soil not far from the Vulture volcano, the influence of the strong winds that move the rotating blades of the plateau and the harsh climate have created an ideal environment where a surprising wine was born: Don Chisciotte. The latter is not filtered and is obtained from macerations on the skins of over 10 days. The yeasts used are exclusively indigenous.

Zampaglione's agriculture is of absolute respect for the land and the environment. Already starting from the early '90s, the winery distinguished itself for the use of extremely organic agriculture. Now only treatments with copper and sulfur and a small use of sulfur dioxide are tolerated. The winery is immersed in the Campanian nature, among woods and wheat fields. No one would have ever bet on its wine, but the gamble, commitment, and madness have rewarded the Zampaglione family.
