The Bolgheri Rosso “Borgeri” is a classic Bordeaux blend aged in barrique for 6 months, which preserves the fragrance of ripe fruit and the Mediterranean softness typical of the wines from the Etruscan Coast. In this small area of Maremma Toscana, the noble Bordeaux grape varieties have found a second home, thanks to the suitable soils and a sunny, warm climate, always ventilated by the gentle breezes of the nearby Tyrrhenian Sea. The wines of Giorgio Meletti Cavallari are a sincere and direct expression of the characteristics of this terroir and maintain the artisanal face made of passion, experience, and great knowledge of the particular peculiarities of the Bolgheri area. The very name of the wine is linked to the history of the territory, recalling the ancient name of Bolgheri, found on a map by Leonardo da Vinci from 1453.
“Borgeri” is born from the grapes of the Piastraia vineyard, 4 hectares cultivated at an altitude of over 300 meters above sea level, in the highest part of the hill of Castagneto Carducci. Here the soil is rich in skeleton, particularly in schist of galestro, which makes it particularly suitable for the cultivation of international grapes. The vines are trained to a spurred cordon, with a density of 5600 plants per hectare and a yield of about 65 quintals per hectare. The wine is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (40%), Merlot (40%), and Syrah (20%). Once the harvest is completed, the grapes are brought to the winery for a cold prefermentative maceration (8/10° C) of about 24/36 hours, followed by fermentation at controlled temperature. The wine matures for a period of 6 months in barrique and completes its aging process with another 8 months in bottle before being released on the market.
The Rosso “Borgeri” best expresses the classic characteristics of the younger and more immediate wines of Bolgheri, which focus primarily on harmony and drinkability, made from ripe fruit and great taste balance. A straightforward red, which highlights the best varietal characteristics of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Syrah grown in these sun-kissed lands. It has an intense ruby red color.
