Falerno del Massico Rosso Villa Matilde 2020
The Falerno del Massico Rosso is a red wine based on Aglianico and Piedirosso, indigenous grapes from the Caserta area. The aging in barriques and oak barrels of various sizes enriches the fruity aroma with hints of spicy spices and toasted elements. The taste is perfectly balanced between softness and freshness, enveloped by a tannic veil of great elegance.
The Red Falerno del Massico wine is a product that carries with it an important charm and stature, already recognized in ancient times. “Nec cellis ideo contende Falernis”, that is, “do not compete with the Falerno,” indeed asserted Virgil in the second book of the Georgics, describing the prestige of a wine that, in those times, was taken as a benchmark for the excellence of its qualities. A tradition of values that is proposed by Villa Matilde with a label where, alongside Aglianico, we find 20% of Piedirosso, for a blend that presents an excellent balance of aromas and flavors on the nose and in the mouth.
The Red Falerno del Massico is born from a blend of indigenous red grape varieties that are very present within the Campania regional borders, namely Aglianico and Piedirosso. The vines of these two varieties, cultivated using the guyot system, grow within the vineyards of the Tenuta di San Castrese, located about 140 meters above sea level, on soils characterized by a volcanic matrix where it is possible to find phosphorus and potassium. The grapes, once harvested and brought to the winemaking facilities of Villa Matilde, ferment alcoholically with frequent pump-overs and délestages, macerating on the skins for about 20-25 days, also undergoing malolactic fermentation. The aging is carried out for 12 months, both in traditional oak barrels and in Allier barriques.
The Falerno del Massico reveals itself to the eye with a hue reminiscent of ruby red, characterized by an intense and deep color. The bouquet of olfactory sensations that emanate to the nose tells of notes of red fruit, alternating with spicy sensations that bring a slight touch of spiciness to the nostrils. On the palate, it is of excellent body, robust, with a balanced sip and a well-defined tannic structure; it ends with a finish that has excellent persistence. A red that carries with it a great wealth of history and tradition, with which the Villa Matilde winery strengthens its love for the Campania region.
