Nero d'Avola 'Lagnusa' Feudo Montoni 2022
Organic and biodynamicThe 'Lagnusa' from Feudo Montoni is born from the vines of Nero d'Avola grafted from another Cru of the winery. Vines over 30 years old that, as the name of the wine suggests, produce few bunches per plant, concentrating balsamic and mineral aromas that are clearly evident to the nose. Fresh and soft on the palate, it reveals menthol hints on the finish.
The “Lagnusa” Nero d’Avola is a Sicilian red wine that turns a flaw into a quality. Indeed, because “lagnusa” in Sicilian means lazy, unproductive: a negative connotation, if it weren't for the fact that for a vineyard low productivity is often an indicator of high quality. This is indeed the case for this label from Feudo Montoni, which is characterized during tasting by a balsamic soul that accompanies the unfolding of aromas and flavors both on the nose and palate. A bottle in which the Nero d’Avola is grafted onto pre-phylloxera vines, thus ensuring a particularly interesting genetic profile.
This “Lagnusa” is a pure Nero d’Avola that comes from vines older than 35 years, located in vineyards at about 600 meters above sea level and cultivated using the trellis method. The peculiarity lies in the fact that the plants are grafted onto old mother vines of Nero d’Avola “Vrucara” – a company cru that survived the phylloxera epidemic –,and thanks to this particular grafting technique, grapes with a unique DNA are obtained. The must ferments in cement containers, also carrying out malolactic fermentation. The aging takes place in three stages: 20 months in cement, 4 months in barrels, and finally, after the bottling operations carried out by Feudo Montoni, another 4 months directly in glass.
The red wine Nero d'Avola "Lagnusa" reveals itself to the eye with a brilliant color, reminiscent of the shade of ruby. The olfactory spectrum is rich, orchestrated on intense spicy and balsamic notes, from which a hint of small forest fruits emerges. On the palate, it is full-bodied, with a fresh sip that is also enhanced by a mentholated taste, in which a more mineral vein can be felt. A label with which Feudo Montoni captures the interest of some of the main Italian industry guides, unanimous in awarding it noteworthy scores.
