Nerobaronj Gulfi 2019
The Nerobaronj by Gulfi is a Sicilian red wine made from Nero d'Avola that presents itself with an impenetrable ruby red color, streaked with purple hues. It releases intense and fragrant aromas of red fruits like cherries and plums with hints of vanilla and sweet spices, while on the palate it is very fruity, harmonious, and of excellent structure, very persistent in the aromatic finish.
The Nerobaronj from the Gulfi winery is a intense, enveloping, and generous red wine produced in Val di Noto in the municipality of Pachino, in that part of eastern Sicily kissed by the sun and the sea that faces the African continent. This label is made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes, an indigenous red grape variety of this territory, also known as "Calabrese", coming from vines aged between 35 and 50 years, cultivated using the alberello method and not irrigated at about 50 meters above sea level, on soils located near the sea characterized by white soils rich in limestone and volcanic iron sands. The winery has been a family-run business for three generations, owning about 70 hectares of vineyards today managed with great care and according to the guidelines prescribed by organic farming by Vito Catania supported by the talented winemaker Salvo Foti.
The Gulfi Nerobaronj is produced with carefully selected grapes, generally harvested in the second half of September. The bunches are then taken to the winery for the destemming and subsequent alcoholic fermentation that takes place in stainless steel containers with long macerations of the must on the skins. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is racked into barriques and tonneaux for a period of at least 24 months, before being bottled and maturing in the bottle for an additional two years before being sold.
The Nerobaronj presents itself with a clear and shiny ruby red color. On the nose, intense aromas of ripe fruit appear, including cherry, blackberry, and blueberry, floral notes of red flowers, spicy hints, and aromatic and vegetable herbs ranging from eucalyptus, thyme, and oregano to capers, dried tomatoes, olives, and coffee. On the palate, it is rich, bold, and concentrated, characterized by a particularly fine tannic structure and great freshness and aromatic persistence. This wine from the Gulfi winery is truly pleasant and enhances the characteristics of a territory with a broad Mediterranean breath.
