The Riesling Grand Cru "Sommerberg" from Aimé Stentz is a granitic white wine of great freshness and aromatic richness. With mineral and fruity hints, aged for 12 months in cask
Sommerberg represents one of the Grand Crus vinified by Aimé Stentz, an area that was recognised as particularly suited to this wine already in the early 1200s. The 'hill of summer', as its name literally translates, gives rise to Riesling grapes of a particularly mineral character, perfectly reflected in the crystal-clear spirit of the wines to which they give rise. The shrewd interpretation of this terroir is the matrix of the house's most prestigious Rieslings.
The Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg vinified by Aimé Stentz comes from the area of the village of Niedermorschwihr, located in the immediate vicinity to the west of Colmar, on the slopes that climb along the flanks of the Vosges mountain range. The soil is characterised by a granitic substratum composed of siliceous rocks, the so-called 'mica of Turckheim', in an advanced layer of disintegration: the result is a true granitic sand rich in mineral elements that are very favourable to viticulture. The vines are over 30 years old and are forced to push their roots deep into the soil, clinging to vertiginous slopes of up to 45%. The not inconsiderable altitude must also be taken into account, rising 400 metres above sea level in full southern exposure. The grapes are harvested by hand at the moment of full ripeness: the bunches are pressed whole and gently using a pneumatic press. Fermentation takes place in steel vats through the action of indigenous yeasts, while the wine is matured for 12 months in large, 100-year-old oak barrels, in accordance with established Alsatian tradition.
Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg made by Aimé Stentz offers itself to the eye in a clear straw-yellow guise with warm golden hues. The nose imparts complex and elegant aromas that express the sunshine and sweetness of candied citrus peel and quince compote, with a sugary touch of light honey and ripe yellow peach, all refreshed by a hint of lime. The background is a bombastic mineral dowry that declares itself openly on tasting: the sip is vertical and taut, composed of vigorous salinity and distinct freshness, amalgamated by a softness of fruity appeal. A Riesling for the great aficionado, to be dared with smoked fish dishes.
