Terrano Skerk 2022
Artisanal
Unusual grapesThe Terrano by Skerk is an expressive red wine with pleasant rusticity, produced on the lands of the Carso plateau. The nose is lively and rich in nuances, recalling small bramble fruits, violet, spices, and rhubarb. Freshness guides the taste profile and is satisfying, rustic, and vibrant, accompanied by a pleasant tannin and a slight hint of wild spices.
The Terrano by Skerk is a typical red from the Carso region, with an intense, rich profile and a great varietal typicity. The Terrano is a red grape variety grown almost exclusively on the Carso plateau, in the border area between Italy and Slovenia. It is a grape with a strong personality, producing characterful wines that, in their youth, are rather angular and rough, with a tannic structure that marks the sip with a distinct relief. It is the quintessential red of the territory, defined as the "blood of Carso" because it expresses the harsh and tough character of these rocky and wind-battered lands. The long aging period in barrel helps to soften and round out the rough edges of the Terrano, without altering its indomitable personality and its intense aromatic profile of fruit and spices.
The Terrano wine is born in the small estate of Sandi Skerk, one of the most famous and highly regarded winemakers in Carso. The vineyards are located in Prepotto in Duino Aurisina, just above the city of Trieste. The Mediterranean climate is refreshed by the Bora, which blows cool and incessantly from the northeast. The Carso plateau is characterized by outcropping limestone rocks, covered by a little red soil rich in iron minerals. It is in this extremely harsh environment that the Terrano manages to sink its roots and produce reds with a strong and decisive character, which well reflect the face of a rugged and tough territory. It is no coincidence that it is precisely an ancient indigenous variety that has adapted well to these particular pedoclimatic conditions over the centuries.
The red Terrano by Sandi Skerk is a straightforward and direct wine, crafted artisanally with the intent of not altering the face of this historic Friulian grape variety and trying to transfer the salient traits of the Carso lands into the glass. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts in oak barrels. The wine matures for 12 months in oak barrels before bottling without filtration. In the glass, it has a dense and impenetrable ruby color. The aromas recall cherry, blackberry, dark berry fruits, hints of underbrush, humus, wild herbs, and spices. On the palate, it has good structure, with a dense and significant tannic texture, rich and satisfying aromas. The finish is very persistent, fresh, and slightly spicy.
