Valtellina Superiore 'Mazer' Nino Negri 2022
"Mazèr" is a Valtellina Superiore that owes its name to the Valtellinese term meaning good, beautiful, and generous. A red of great longevity!
The Valtellina Superiore “Mazer” by Nino Negri is a wine with an intense and elegant character, produced with pure Nebbiolo, traditionally called in Valtellina uva Chiavennasca. Far from the famous hills of the Langhe and Alto Piemonte, Nebbiolo has found a second homeland in Valtellina for centuries, where it expresses itself with wines of great character, austere and decisive. A mountain red characterized by remarkable finesse, persistence, and longevity.
The “Mazer” is born in one of the historical realities of Valtellina. The Nino Negri winery was founded in 1897 and today manages about thirty hectares of property, in addition to vineyards from various small suppliers. Valtellina is one of the very few alpine valleys oriented on the east-west axis. A condition that allows for a sunny south-facing slope characterized by strong temperature excursions between day and night, which enable a slow and perfect maturation of the grapes. The vineyards are cultivated at about 400 meters above sea level, on terraces with stony and sandy soils.sandy. At the end of the harvest, 20% of the grapes is slightly dried in the fruit room. Fermentation takes place in steel at controlled temperature. It matures for 20 months in wood, half in barriques and half in large barrels.
The Valtellina Superiore “Mazer”, produced by Nino Negri, is a Nebbiolo with a strong personality, which thanks to the slight drying, acquires greater structure and taste softness. In the glass, it has a garnet red color. On the nose, it opens with notes of red fruit, hints of sweet spices, nuances of rhubarb, cinchona, and memories of noble woods. The sip is smooth and decisive, with delicate fruit, a dense and evolved tannic structure. The finish is balanced, with a beautiful freshness at the close.
