Valtellina Superiore Sassella 'Marena' Mamete Prevostini 2023
The Valtellina Superiore Sassella "Marena" by Mamete Prevostini is a Valtellinese red wine made from Nebbiolo grapes, locally called Chiavennasca, which matures for 12 months in oak barrels. It presents itself visually with a light ruby color streaked with garnet reflections and expresses notes of berries, marasca, and dried fruit on the nose. On the palate, it is harmonious, fresh, and velvety, with good body and excellent aromatic intensity.
The Valtellina Superiore Sassella “Marena” Mamete Prevostini is a Lombard red of good intensity, which throughout the tasting develops a particular fruity note that brings to mind cherry. It impresses with the softness with which it envelops the nose and palate, reminding us how the elegance of Nebbiolo can manifest itself with peaks of excellence only in a few areas outside of Piemonte, one of which is undoubtedly Valtellina, which with its terraced vineyards gives life to the “Marena”. An intensely aromatic label, to be brought to the table during the warmest and most convivial dinners.
This Valtellina Superiore Sassella “Marena” originates from terraced vineyards, where the Chiavennasca grape is cultivated, a name that indicates the Nebbiolo grape in this area. We find ourselves at an altitude between 350 and 550 meters above sea level, facing south, in a terroir composed mainly of sand, where we also find a small percentage of silt. The harvest begins in the second week of October and the grapes obtained from the destemming of the bunches are gently pressed; the must ferments in stainless steel containers at a controlled temperature. The final aging takes place in oak barrels for 12 months, after which the bottling operations are carried out.
The “Marena” is a Sassella Valtellina Superiore that presents itself visually with a ruby red color, crossed by slight reflections tending more towards garnet, visible at the rim. The fruit is the absolute protagonist on the nose, with nuances that tell it with different accents and references. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, balanced, with a refreshing sip, which ends with a slight aftertaste that recalls the flavor of cherry. A red that assembles, like a puzzle, from small parcels of different vines, which come together in a product with an extremely pleasant profile, perfect to pair with red meat main courses and game.
