Balia di Zola

Among the sweet hills of Romagna, within the municipality of Modigliana, operates the Balia di Zola winery run by Veruska Eluci, committed to the enhancement of the most authentic expression of Sangiovese from Romagna. It was in 1999 when Veruska and her husband Claudio Fiore decided to start their own winemaking project by identifying an old 18th-century farmhouse locally known as "balìa", a term used to refer to the ancient residences of officials and from which the estate's name originates. The couple dedicated themselves to recovering the old vineyards and renovated the farmhouse to serve as a winery. The production philosophy embraced by Veruska and Claudio is based on the concept that good wine comes from the vineyard, which is why the agronomic aspect is meticulously cared for by the couple.

The Balia di Zola estate includes 15 hectares of land, of which 5 are reserved for vines and the remaining part dedicated to woods and olive groves, located at an altitude of about 250 meters above sea level. The traditional grape varieties Sangiovese and Albana, also represented by very old vines, are cultivated by Veruska and Claudio on soils consisting of limestone marls, clay, and sandstone, with a south and southwest exposure. The agronomic management aims to preserve the health of the plants and the soil, as well as to limit the yields in grapes per hectare in order to elevate the quality of the berries. The harvest is carried out strictly by hand, and the same respectful approach to raw materials is adopted in the winery, where fermentations occur spontaneously thanks to the sole intervention of indigenous yeasts in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The subsequent aging periods always take place in steel for the more immediate expressions or in French oak barrels for the more complex wines, always honoring the character of the territory and the grape variety.

As already mentioned, the selection of the Balia di Zola winery is focused on Sangiovese from Romagna, offered in the Superiore version with the ‘Balitore’ and in the Riserva version with the ‘Redinoce’. Both interpretations surprise with their brilliant freshness and
