Fattoria dei Barbi is a historic estate in Montalcino that in its long history has been adept at combining tradition and innovation, expressing the character of Sangiovese at its best through a highly pioneering approach. The Cinelli Colombini family, who have owned the winery since 1790, have owned land in Montalcino since as far back as 1352 and began producing Brunello at the end of the 19th century, quickly establishing themselves nationally and internationally. In 1997 Stefano Cinelli Colombini, the current owner, took over the L'Aquilaia dei Barbi estate after having developed a deep interest in the wines of the Tuscan Maremma. He was the first in Europe, in 2001, to experiment with cryomaceration of red grapes, in collaboration with the University of Pisa, with which he also created the protocol to produce high-tech wine without the addition of chemicals in 2014.
The area of land owned by Fattoria dei Barbi comprises approximately 350 hectares of fields, olive groves, woods and vineyards, distributed between the territories of Montalcino, Scansano and Chianti. In addition to Sangiovese, Tuscany's main grape variety, the Cinelli Colombini raise the local varieties Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia del Chianti, Canaiolo and Vermentino, as well as the international grapes Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In general, the rows are planted on soils rich in marl, sand and clay, between 250 and 500 metres above sea level. The winery makes use of the most modern technology in the sector, while respecting the consolidated Montalcino tradition, with the Brunellos being vinified in stainless steel tanks and then subjected to long ageing in oak barrels of various capacities.
The Fattoria dei Barbi winery is the creator of a vast and differentiated production, based on renowned Tuscan denominations reserved for red wines. Brunello di Montalcino in primis, in the historic 'vintage', Riserva and 'Vigna del Fiore' versions, but also Morellino di Scansano, Chianti Classico and Vinsanto del Chianti. There are also accessible labels with an innovative style, such as 'Sulphite-free', 'Birbone Toscano' or 'Rosso dei Barbi'.
