Mariotto Claudio

The Claudio Mariotto winery is not only among the most famous in the Colli Tortonesi area, but it has played a decisive role in the rebirth and enhancement of this territory and its symbolic grape variety: Timorasso. The estate is located near Vho and spans over 50 hectares. The vineyards are all situated in hilly areas, at an altitude between 250 and 300 meters above sea level. Its origins date back to the early 1920s, when the great-grandfather of the current owner began planting the first vines. The company has maintained its typically family character and has been able to carry on the oldest local traditions over time, enhancing native grapes and producing high-quality artisanal wines.

The Tortona area is located in the southeastern part of Piemonte, towards the border with Liguria, and has a very particular microclimate that is particularly suited for viticulture. The vineyards are cultivated in the pre-Apennine hilly area, which is only 60 kilometers from the sea. The sunny exposures are influenced by the breezes, which help maintain a mild and temperate climate. The vineyards are managed with full respect for the environment, without the use of pesticides. Among the rows are the historic grape varieties of the area, Barbera, Dolcetto, Cortese, and especially Timorasso, a grape with remarkable oenological potential, which today represents the symbol of the territory.

The rediscovery of this ancient white grape variety is due to a few local producers. Present in these lands since the Middle Ages, Timorasso was the most cultivated grape on the Tortona Hills. Only after the destruction of European vineyards caused by phylloxera was Timorasso almost completely abandoned and forgotten in favor of more productive and market-demanded grapes. Only in the early 1990s, Claudio Mariotto, along with a few other local winemakers, believed in its qualities and began replanting vineyards with the idea of producing a great aging white wine. Today the winery produces several versions of Timorasso, some from particularly }]},{particularly suited vineyards.
