Rocca di Frassinello-Castellare winery was born in the Maremma from a first and forward-looking partnership between an Italian and a French company: a great little project designed by Domanin Baron Rothschild-Lafite in the light of the great value of Paolo Panerai’s Castellare winery.

In the late 90s Castellare of Castellina winery wanted to look over the Chianti Classico area, looking for a new territory that could offer high and special quality at the same time. The will of Castellare was to not focus on the obvious and the known, but to see if the rest of the Maremma land was equally or more qualified than those of Bolgheri and Scansano. The successful outcome of the research was so place between the towns of Gavorrano and Ribolla, becoming part of a young Doc, still little known, the one of Monteregio di Massa Marittima.

After this first great meeting, a second, important one happen: the agreement between Castellare and Domaines Barons de Rothschild. From the beginning, the project has planned to follow the historical experience of Castellare in the cultivation and vinification of the main grape of Tuscany, Sangiovese, and that of Lafite on classic French grape varieties, Cabernet (Franc and Sauvignon), Merlot, Petit Verdot and Shiraz.

The common love for the vines, through lived experiences and different grape varieties, has been able to achieve the first wine, the first major union between the two main countries producers in the world, Italy and France, by exploiting the know-how of these two great companies... a magnificent challenge that has been able to give from the first moment a wine of excellence, a symbol of history and a truly unique terroir.
