The Tenuta del Buonamico estate has a long and important history in the Lucca area and is certainly a well-known name in the small district of Montecarlo. Founded in the early 1960s by a number of famous restaurateurs from Turin, it is currently owned by the Fontana family and covers approximately 100 hectares, of which 45 are dedicated exclusively to the cultivation of vines. The Fontana family, who came on the scene in 2008, immediately made the most of their entrepreneurial skills, expanding their boundaries, exploring new commercial avenues, renewing the company's organisation and restructuring the winery with a focus on enhancing the ancient knowledge of winemaking. Today, the estate is an important exponent of the wines of Montecarlo di Lucca, gaining increasing and well-deserved success day after day thanks to its high quality wines that are produced with respect for the territory. The people behind it are Dino Fontana and Eugenio Fontana, the owner and co-owner respectively. Dino, after working in his family's olive oil business which he brought to international prominence, decided to embark on a new adventure in the world of wine. With the help of his son Eugenio, who brought his business knowledge to the table, he expanded the range of wines and modernised the winery.
The Buonamico winery cultivates old international and local varieties that were imported to Montecarlo more than a century ago by Giulio Magnani, a passionate winemaker who, after a trip to France and a careful study of the best vines, selected some varieties and exported them to Tuscany, precisely to Montecarlo. Therefore, in the Tenuta di Buonamico estate, in addition to the old vines of national origin, such as Trebbiano, Sangiovese and Canaiolo, international varieties are also grown, such as Sauvignon, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Blanc, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The land is divided into three sections, with two belonging to the family since 2008 and one which is more recent. The exposure is north-east, the vines are trained to the Guyot and spurred cordon systems, and the soils are of a medium texture, with clay typical of the Lucca area emerging on a sandy and stony matrix. Harvesting is carried out manually into small boxes (normally at night) and is assisted by a modern harvesting machine. In the cellar the production process is controlled by highly qualified people who monitor every single step. Fermentation normally takes place in stainless steel containers and ageing in vitrified cement or wooden barrels.
The wines of Tenuta del Buonamico are typical and clean expressions of their territory, with a modern style. Try the Montecarlo Rosso and the Montecarlo Bianco, both of which are great symbols of the denomination. These wines are produced from a blend of grapes and are characterised by an elegant, incisive and decidedly unique taste!
