Villscheider Zweigelt is a red wine characterized by a juicy freshness that well reflects the alpine territory from which it comes. We are in Alto-Adige, in the Valle d’Isarco, where the Villscheider winery cultivates, among others, the Zweigelt grape variety, a genetic hybrid created in 1922 by Austrian professor Fritz Zweigelt by crossing Blaufränkisch with Saint Laurent. It is the most cultivated black grape variety in Austria, which gives its best in cool climates like that of South Tyrol. Within their estate, the Hipold family is also dedicated to catering thanks to the attached typical tavern where one can enjoy the traditional cuisine of the Valle d’Isarco.
The red wine from Alto-Adige Villscheider Zweigelt is produced with only grapes of the same black grape variety, coming from a vineyard planted in 2001. The plants are rooted in steep, stony, low-calcareous, lean, and permeable soils, located at 700 meters above sea level with a southeast exposure. After harvesting, the bunches are crushed in stainless steel tanks for alcoholic fermentation and the subsequent aging of 5 months takes place for 2/3 of the mass in steel and for the remaining part in oak barrels.

The nose evokes fruity notes of berries, wild fruits, and cherry that blend with light spicy perceptions of black pepper. The taste is direct and fragrant, endowed with juicy freshness, a full mineral vein, and soft and pleasant tannins. This label pairs beautifully with grilled white or red meats or with platters of speck and cured meats from the South Tyrolean tradition.
