Barolo Conteisa Gaja 2020
Rare winesThe Barolo "Conteisa" by Gaja is a great red wine from Piemonte, robust and intense, aged in large barrels and barriques for more than 24 months. Complex aromas of red fruit, spices, underbrush and licorice make up the broad personality of this wine that can evolve in the bottle for over 20 years
The Conteisa, which in Piedmontese dialect means "contention", is a wine with which the pioneering Piedmontese vigneron, Angelo Gaja, pays homage to the dispute that took place in 1275 between the municipalities of La Morra and Barolo for possession of the Cerequio area. Almost all the vineyards from which this wine is produced are located in those territories with a predominant south-facing exposure of the rows, situated in the homonymous cru Cerequio.
The wine is a blend of Nebbiolo and Barbera grapes, carefully hand-picked, which are fermented separately in steel tanks for two weeks. At the end of the malolactic fermentation, the wines are blended and then transferred into new barriques where they age for a period of 13 months. The wine thus obtained undergoes an additional aging period in large barrels for another 12 months.
The Conteisa by Gaja reveals a ruby red color, with garnet reflections. On the nose, it expresses a remarkable intensity due to balsamic notes of licorice, spices, toasted hints of cocoa, tobacco and forest red fruits, such as blackberries and blueberries. On the palate, the wine reveals itself to be warm and imposing, with a lively yet balanced tannin and a very long finish.
